To ensure that the filling volume meets the standard weight, Warsteiner Brewery in Germany weighs the barrels before and after the filling process. In this process, the company uses Cognex code readers to read hard-to-read barcodes affixed to the barrels.

At Warsteiner, the method for determining the amount of beer depends on the type of packaging. If it is a beer bottle, the filling level can be determined; For larger barrels (kegs), flow measurement is used, and for "Stichfass" (smaller kegs), Warsteiner uses a weighing method to determine the amount of beer. In the "Stichfass" workshop, the tracking of barrels during production is currently done through a combination of label printing, precise weighing and bar code reading. BHV-Automation GmbH uses Cognex DM 302X barcode readers to read hard-to-read 2D data matrix codes. The reader is powerful enough to read the code on completely soggy and wrinkled reflective labels. The DM 302X helps BHV-Automation increase the read rate of the application from 92% to 100%. This optimizes the complex manual reweighing steps in Warsteiner's original process.
